The teaching of Reading is crucial for literacy development. This means that teachers of Reading must be equipped with knowledge of the components of reading, use of technology-based instruction, other appropriate methodologies and diagnostic procedures that can be used for delivering effective instruction in reading. The course is therefore designed to produce competent teachers who are knowledgeable about diagnostic assessment, the content of reading instruction, various methodologies and approaches to facilitate reading development, provide remediation and produce independent readers. Student teachers will demonstrate their knowledge through the use of a variety of role play situations and active demonstrations of reading strategies and techniques.

In order for teachers to be effective in the delivery of Language Arts instruction, they should be knowledgeable of the components, instruction focus and instructional procedures that are research-based and be able to apply their knowledge to their practice. This course seeks to provide an overview and familiarity with the various areas of the language arts and related communication skills that will facilitate literacy development.

This course is designed to give student teachers the opportunity to apply/put into practice all the knowledge, methodologies and strategies they have been exposed to over 3 semesters. The practical application will further expose students to authentic situations in the classroom over approximately 12 weeks. The entire process will be guided by the Practicum Handbook and values 9 credits.

This course is a methodology and content course focused on the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts at the early childhood level. The course is divided into seven units. This course explores developmentally appropriate procedures for facilitating young children’s construction of mathematical knowledge in preschool and early primary grades. It focuses on highlighting the fact that young children’s natural interest and curiosity can be used as a basis for learning, understanding, and enhancing mathematics skill acquisition and concept development.

The creative arts course is designed to explore the principles, methods, and materials for teaching young children music, movement, visual arts, and dramatic play through process-oriented experiences to support divergent thinking. This course will teach students how to design and implement creative activities to encourage positive social interactions, to encourage the development of problem solving techniques, and to encourage self-awareness and child-centered learning.

The Foundations of Social Studies Course for Early Childhood Teachers is intended to prepare teachers of early childhood grades with a variety of skills, concepts, understanding and attitudes which will make them more effective in their role as Social Studies teachers. It is designed to utilise the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to effectively teach the Social Studies content which has been integrated around major themes in the Early Childhood Curriculum. It is aimed at giving the beginning teacher a deeper understanding and appreciation of teaching Social Studies topics at the kindergarten level and providing them with learning activities which can nurture intellectual and social development.

The teaching of Language Arts in primary schools has been the subject of national debate by educators in several spheres of influence. However, amidst the differences in perspectives there is agreement that the teacher needs to be empowered to effectively guide students’ language development in our schools. There is also consensus that the preparation of Language Arts teachers needs to be contextually driven. This context includes knowledge of the language milieu, curricular dictates and policy issues in the Language Arts. Ultimately this course is intended to prepare competent Language Arts teachers who are able to operate with sensitivity to their instructional context.
