Primary Education

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) has been designed for graduates who wish to teach at the primary school level. The degree has a strong English and Mathematics focus with a student centred approach to teaching and learning. The programme integrates education theory with classroom practice for all areas. Core units in this degree cover the essential topics of digital literacy, planning lessons, classroom management, understanding learning difficulties and special education. School experience begins with observations and discussions of the wide variety of effective teaching strategies and over the duration of the degree will continue with workshops and periods of block teaching which culminate in a whole term internship.

What to Expect

This four-year programme combines current learning methodologies, educational theories, and psycho-social courses with foundational subjects such as sciences, mathematics, and language, tailored for primary-level teaching. Aligned with international educational standards and the Government of Jamaica’s National Standard Curriculum (NSC), the programme integrates the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) assessment methodologies to prepare you for modern approaches to teaching and evaluation. From the first year, you’ll engage in observation and practical activities, including supervised practicums in primary schools, to develop your teaching skills in real-world settings.

Outcomes of the Programme

Graduates will emerge as confident, professional educators equipped with the pedagogical knowledge and practical experience needed to manage teaching-learning processes effectively. The programme culminates in a full semester of immersion in a primary educational facility, where you’ll refine your competencies under the guidance of faculty and external assessors. By analysing and improving your teaching practices in live classroom situations, you’ll be prepared to inspire and educate young learners while meeting the demands of contemporary primary education.
