Students in the English-speaking Caribbean are faced with several language influences which affect their ability to use Standard English effectively. These influences are readily observed in their written expression and interfere with their ability to produce good academic writing. The course promotes the mastery of writing skills for the purpose of developing proficiency in academic writing. Students will gain a brief understanding of the evolution and function of language in the Anglophone Caribbean. Students will also gain appreciation of composing academic writing with an understanding of discourse types and strategies for written discourse as they compose different types of writing. Emphasis will be placed on proper writing conventions, grammar, punctuation, correct usage, sentence structure and vocabulary development. Students will learn to effectively organize, develop, write and revise paragraphs and academic essays.
